After embarking on a long, musical journey, there is a new Beyond Istanbul. With the support of my
label Trikont, I was able to go beyond the usual DJ club music compilations and explore Turkey’s
different musical genres. I want to include you on this musical journey through this genres, that made
a deep impression on me, sometimes making me cry, sometimes making me dance. These songs,
showing a Turkey, which also includes a subculture and überculture, and also plays with kitch and
klichées, transmit political and social critiques which might also take you through a range of emotions.
It is a typical work by Ipek: that is eclectic as it is dynamic.
This album, made with people from Turkey living in the diaspora, consists of soul, hiphop, trip-hop,
Balkan, belly dance songs, and electronica while keeping a traditional base. On the other hand, without
going into the ubiquitous music on the market, Beyond Istanbul 2 takes music from Istanbul’s
subcultures as well as more traditional groups and puts them together.
